MAJOR SPOILERS: 1:52:28 The game is doing a double meaning in that, yes, it's fourth wall breaking about the heinous acts you as the player are going to be asked to do, but later elaborates in universe that it was speaking to a character literally controlling your character. It's not just telling you to quit the game, but the developers knew their game was polarizing and purposely made it come across that way on multiple occasions out of confidence.

The critiques were harsh on Everhood, comparing it to Undertale. It just has different priorities. The combat spectacle is where the weight of the story and abstractions are made real.

I've been on the fence about Loop Hero but I gotta be honest, watching it played is definitely boring as heck. Like, I think I respect the hell out of it as an idle game and maybe it would be a good mobile app (interface is mostly drag and drop it seems) but as a PC game I can't say it sends flames of desire through my body.

I feel like they were a being a bit harsh on Everhood. The game feels a lot like a labour of love and the mechanics are pretty solid. The story is less cohesive than Undertale, but it is more fun to play.

Unfortunately, Everhood looks too shallow to truly break out as a popular indie game. The gameplay and characters look interesting enough... but where’s the connective tissue? What’s the explanation for every character in this world attacking you with fun music? Some contextualization and explanation for WHY everyone is attacking the player character in this world could go a long way. For example... Say this underworld is barren and full of mercenaries and thugs, which seems true enough upon watching the first 20 minutes or so of its gameplay. However, flesh that out: What led to this world becoming seemingly deserted by anyone relatively sane? In addition, can the game just give any justification whatsoever for it’s combat system as a way of interacting with hostile or even friendly NPC’s? Say, for example, everyone in this underworld has a prowess for a particular dance or musical instrument. The player character, however, having lost his arm, cannot possess a musical instrument, and can’t dance either. The former can explain why he can’t initially fight back, and the latter explains how he survives by purposely dodging the music itself by remaining “off-rhythm.” Then, as Yahtzee alluded to, he later gets his arm back and is able to fight back against the NPC’s when they attack him for whatever reason. I don’t know much of the context of HOW he is able to fight back now that he has his arm back... but let’s say he stumbles upon a musical instrument himself: A one-stringed guitar. He can’t quite play his own song with it like the NPC’s can, but he can strum it in intervals in order to counter enemies while they are attacking him. Just a thought... If the game does contextualize and explain it’s combat system later into the story, please feel free to correct me and what not.

@Sam Lipton it actually does get explained somewhat in the lore SPOILERS In the mage's letters they discuss how immortality warps the self, how people who would normally go about their lives without a fuss over time became prone to play nasty tricks and go on to be cruel to each other entirely out of boredom.

@maric24 I think a big hang up I have with the game is that from the beginning, it does not contextualize why certain NPC’s that you interact with attack you, even outwardly friendly ones. All (good) games give a reason for the player’s current predicament. In this game, it just seems like you wake up in an unfamiliar world and people attack you because... you’re foreign to their environment?

You said it at the end lol; the game contextualizes most of what you just said by the end of it. I guess the only thing it misses is basically, "why music-based dance battles", and I think the main answer to that is: because it's fun and visually engaging. Yahtzee was being pretty uncharitable in his critique here imo, considering that it seems like he did play the game through to the end.

Nothing about Everhood was nonsensical, the game does start explaining things as you progress. Sure it looks like nonsense at the beginning, but it has a reason. Of course there's parts left to interpretation, but the story makes sense 1/3 into the game.

They Literally get a tenth into the game and makes absolute statements on how it’s trying to say something but really isn’t. Like how can you say that when you know next to nothing? Game reviewers get so confident in they’re judgements that they will write off a game’s story before they even hear it smh

@DEATHrocket777 If we're gonna get technical it originally it meant "The Dragon", much like a "Mountain Chicken" is actually a type of frog. It's almost like basing everything solely by it's name is pointless because languages are far too complicated to be a reliable source. My original comment was based from what I've seen in medieval fantasy, since it's all mythical anyway. Vampires seem to be bit of a strange mix between undead and demon, but I haven't seen enough medieval fantasy stuff to fully understand them, and their lore likely varies between franchises so it's all a bit hazy.
