I was _tormented_ as a kid because I had decided there were 100 levels in Super Mario World. I was 'stuck' at 96 levels for a couple of years. I was so obsessed with Mortal Kombat 2 that despite my shyness, I started awkwardly asking random kids if they happened to know any secrets or fatalities. The first kid that entertained my weird, out of nowhere questioning is still a close friend 25 years later

Hey Jack, not sure if you read this but I just wanted to shoot this out just in case. Writing this more for me than you, and I don't use/despise twitter so this will have to do. I know the escapist is supposed to be apolitical and that it does not mean your twitter must be, but please hear me out about why I have to ignore your work going forward. I could always tell that we had different values and beliefs but you kept it out of your work. Hey, if the RR article makes sense to you- cool. That's nice, but it is lies and when you actively spread RR articles you are spreading untruths. I don't know if you've realized just how much slander and falsification was in that article but you should go ahead look into it. Don't just say "look, stats and citations guys, it's real because look at how it's presented." As much as I like your work I just cannot endorse you spreading such heinous lies. So I guess when something comes out with you whether its on Escapist or RLM I have to pass because I do not condone the spreading of false information. While you seem to be far more liberal than me (I'm moderate and hate the far left and far right, but that's called "Alt-right" these days) please don't do something that heinous again. A request from a former fan. So thanks for years of entertainment Jack. From RLM, your series on here where you geeked out about hardware, previously recorded, your joint work with yathzee, I've really enjoyed watching you through the years. It's a shame I can't continue to watch them. I wish you the best, I really do but I can't support your content going forward. Parasocial relationships are weird but I guess this is a one sided breakup in a way, ha. I really hate the lie you spread by endorsing RR's lies, but wish you the best. Goodluck to you man! Goodbye.

My first game obsession was pretty basic for a British kid in the ‘90s. Sonic. My friend Stephen and I were nuts about it. Funnily enough I never actually owned Sonic 1, but I played it enough at other people’s houses that I did complete it. Stephen and I were almost zen-like in the connection we had playing the special stages on Sonic 2. I stayed over at his house and we spent an epic day making our way through the game. The three acts of the Metropolis Zone nearly killed us. Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were the ones I really spent time with. Sonic 3 blew my mind, I thought Knuckles was the coolest character ever. There was a weekly comic too, Sonic the Comic, that turned the plot of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles into a really detailed story with fantastic artwork by 2000 AD artist Richard Elson. I also have a vivid memory of sitting in front of my TV with my friend John and a tape recorder, taping the music from the Ice Cap Zone Act 1. I used to draw Sonic characters as a kid as well, but thankfully I a) grew out of the games and b) didn’t “graduate” to drawing pictures of said characters with massive penises all fucking each other.

I actually really like the points you guys make about nostalgia. There has got to be some truth about the crushing weight of reality being skewed, yet presented to impressionable young minds through the information highway. I mean... large portions of adults can't even adjust to internet socialization. Getting stuck in echo chambers is really bad for developing a reasonable sense of rationalization; Example: Countless unsourced political pundit shows that pander to baser reactions while disregarding known scientific data. Another example: I've met multiple autistic people who think it's okay to insult people as normal conversation because the internet normalized it; It's not really their fault. (But still not necessarily easy to deal with.) It may seem silly, but a huge example for me is Digimon World for PS1 (1999). There's a dynamic where you can evolve your creature based on how you raised them (unlike the show). It's an alright game at best, but my nostalgia makes me very fond of it, because it reminds me of a time when I couldn't look up what to do, so there was a great mystery revolving around the consequences of my actions (a universal feeling I associate with youth). There may have been FAQs posted online after a while, but my internet access was limited at 9 years old. If you look it up now, people pretty much only talk about the evolution chart and statistical requirements, and not consider the idea of their own behavior affecting their outcome. Maybe part of it is we just need to make sure our (potential) children aren't addicted to the internet at an early age; Just because the internet is a fantastic tool doesn't mean you have to be one, too.

I wonder how stressful it must be for a developer to make secrets in levels, while not even knowing if they will be found. How to nail that perfect boundary where its hidden, but it gets found by the player and subsequently makes the game world expand purely by the expectations that arise. Magnificent feeling for a player, and Im sure the dev must feel amazing when they see the puzzle(?) cracked.

Fallout 3 made me absolutely obsessed with the fallout universe. I forced myself not to hunt down a copy of the fallout bible and fallout brotherhood of steel via ebay. If i find them in a thift store or pawn shop i will buy it but not for the inflated prices on the net. I do have a pdf of the fallout ttrpg and have run a game and ran another game by creating a really crappy version of it before i found that pdf. Ive also bought all the games other than brotherhood and 76 twice. Once for my ps and again for pc but with the collection of fallout 1, 2, and tactic cuz one of my laptops ate disk. Witcher 3 got me to buy all the other witcher games and all the books that were translated.

Nowadays I only finish them once and forget about it because they're more like really long, boring visual novels with the whole "gotta catch 'em all!" thing shoved in as an afterthought so it can still technically be considered a game.

Given Yahtzee mentioning that some peoples weird ship fanfics are just two people hanging out. How long before someone writes a fanfic where Jack and Yahtzee record an episode of Slightly Something Else?

I remember fans of a podcast writing new episodes of a podcast that ended. So it's probably a thing.

i just realized that the brittish say mario properly and americans don't. mario should be pronounced like a male version of maria (because thats what it is)

The way that the English language uses vowels does butcher a lot of pronunciation from other languages in general.

I don't think most brits say it properly then! Although we do say it better than Americans, we put the stress on the first syllable which I don't think is correct.

My first gaming "obsession" probably was either with either Goldeneye or Metal gear solid. I would play both over and over because I loved trying to get through them as sneakily as possible. They made me discover my absolute love of the stealth genera. Also, this is making me wanna go watch Yahtzee's LP of dizzy with Gabe on his old personal channel.

@Alex I had an N64. My buddy gave me his ps1 with a game or 2 because he got a ps2 on launch day. So the PlayStation was a hand me down, and my parent got me a 64 when it had already been out like 3-4 years so the price drops were pretty affordable. I was usually a videogame generation behind growing up, but I still got to play the best....just 3-4 years after everyone else

@D2ME Yes that was him, I loved a few early 3D games as well, Soul Edge for example is still one of my favourite fighting games, and certainly still better than any of it 7 sequels, but it is quite ugly none the less. Seing that like Megarace it had awesome cinematic going for it (best video game intro ever), maybe I was easy to sway by cut scenes? Than again few of the RPG's I loved had cutscenes (though Dark Side of Xeen had some great ones).

So was my older brother, a fun game I think, but due to personal experiences I can say definitively not for everybody. Anyway the whole 90's, with some exception, I was more into the early 90'S games than the later 90's games, partially because late 2D looked better than early 3D partly because the early 90's were the source of so many of the greatest games of all time in general. I Mean Wipeout didn't even have a Lance Boyle, what's up with that?
