Yahtzee - re your conversation about Waifus in Starstruck Vagabond... how about capturing game event data plus player choices from your NPC interactions and conversations, then later have these drive a system for future chats where there's a chance to advance the relationship or drive it backwards. Like, "Hey, remember that [Astral Megashark] that we took out on the way to [BUMSIC-C]? That was ace - didn't realise you could [dodge] like that."

Stardew is pretty complex to be honest and i get quite overwhelmed that there is TOO much too do. SoS: FOMT ... was a good remake but obviously lacking compared to Stardew. It had a lot more QoL features than the previous version of the game. SoS: Pironeers of Olive Town isn't quite at stardew level of features but i feel theyve definitly gone further than FOMT which only came out last year

I’m not excusing a product put on the market in this condition, but I guess Marvelous treated this particular title are a bit of a side project, even passing a lot of the work out to an outside studio. They are in the process of fixing some of it, like allowing you to cue up multiple tasks with makers, so you don’t need as many, as well as writing new dialog for everyone so they have more personality. But things like a lack of character portraits can’t be fixed. The company has been putting all their energy and effort into Rune Factory 5, which will hopefully release in a better state than this. I’m enjoying PoOT, but yeah, they dropped the ball on this one.

For farm sim ideas, I’d suggest checking out My Time At Portia (not on Switch, worst port). It’s a somewhat unfinished mess in some ways, but it is ambitious for the genre, in fact, the “scheduling dates with characters” idea they had is in MTaP. Talk to the person, pick a date, time, and location, and they’ll show up. Then you can do various activities to boost their effection, from just sitting and talking, to going to dinner and picking dishes they like, to balloon rides, and even hot springs dates. And if you stand them up, you lose points, appropriately.

TMGS has a date system were it reminds you of the date but later on in the game you have to remember which part of the city it’s in and which station you have to wait at for your date to show up. It always fakes you out too by saying “{they’re} taking a while to show up” making you think you might be waiting at the wrong station and you can choose to go to another or continue waiting. There’s an idea for the date system Yahtz

Imagine if these cutesy farming games were even a tiny bit realistic. And you had to, in Jack's words, "take a bolt gun to pig's head" before carving up its corpse over the bloody brown patch of land, and selling the parts? How many kids would end up turning vegan if we had a game like that in our childhood instead of Harvest Moon? 12:30 I have a strong suspicion that all this "bearing" bullshite wasn't in the original game (and it was probably clearly labeled as feminine/masculine), and it was just translated that way for the western market. But you can't exactly "translate" your way out of the game mechanics, so then you get those choices in the game proper. 1:03:23 No-no, Jack. HusbanDO, not husbanDU! P.S. Nah, Yahtzee is definitely the Rabbit - grumpy, cynical, etc XD

A note from a vegan: the point is not to have practically ZERO animals dying, as you’re right, that’s impossible. We’re not “kidding ourselves” because we know that there will always be incidental harm. The point to veganism is to reduce the amount of harm as much as possible. Yeah, commercial farming harms animals, but due to feed conversion ratios, far more harvesting of plants happens in animal farming than in plant farming. Those combine harvesters aren’t always used in harvesting vegetables. Also remember that by intentionally breeding animals, often the males are culled after birth. For every chicken out there there’s a dead rooster chick. By choosing to eat animals, more animals die. It’s that simple. Think of it like driving a car - even as a vegan you’re bound to hit bugs and a squirrel or two accidentally over the years, sure, but if you’re eating animals it’s the equivalent of speeding up to hit a deer on purpose every day and taking out six squirrels as you approach. So the “you kill animals too” argument is a tu quoque fallacy. Ok bye.

@Jos the only supplement that’s a huge concern is B12, and our ancestors weren’t getting their B12 exclusively from meat. Drinking from untreated natural water sources and eating food fresh from the rich soil in the wild would have provided more than enough B12. I think of taking a supplement more as a way to avoid giardia than a way of avoiding meat. People who eat meat are still commonly deficient anyway. I used to eat a hamburger every day and never thought I’d be a vegan of 8 years, growing my own beans. Just keep an open mind about it. Humans’ physiology clearly thrives on plants - look at the Adventist health study if you have any doubts. Flesh really isn’t the nutritional powerhouse that most people think it is. Peace

@Dan Stackhouse Yeah, I definitely get your point. It'd be better if they didn't get killed at all. I realize I'm arguably hypocritical by not going all the way and becoming vegetarian or vegan. I'm not convinced it's very healthy to be vegan, though. I know you can take supplements, but we evolved in such a way that took eating meat into account. Plus, this sounds selfish and I suppose it is, but I love meat so ridiculously much. To give it up would be to give up a lot of pleasure and happiness for me. It's a lot easier to give it up if you're more indifferent about meat than I am. But I do want to do SOMETHING, you know? And the line I've drawn for myself is to stay clear of meat that came from animals that were slaughtered cruelly. That's difficult in Holland, where I'm from, because it's not required to lable halal or kosher meat as such, meaning a lot meat you buy in grocery stores may well have come from animals who felt every little sting from the knife as it cut in their throats a third of the way in, before bleeding to death. There are labels we use for meat that belonged to animals that had a relatively good life and those labels don't get put on halal or kosher meat, so there are ways. It's hard to order meat at a restaurant or establishment, because it's not always clear if the meat they use has such a label. I wish the law was a lot more strict and banned halal and kosher altogether. But sadly, we deal with cowardly politicians who are afraid of being accused of racist or discriminatory for saying the wellbeing of animals is more important than someone's immoral fairytale.

@Jos I used to think that way. The thing is, animals don’t want to die, even if there’s no pain. Is it ok to kill a dog, cat, horse, raccoon, squirrel for a snack just because they don’t feel any pain when you do it? Not saying we need to hash it out here - just food for thought because I literally used to say exactly what you just said haha. Being vegan is a lot easier than people think it is, once you build new habits. Cheers.

I have a lot of respect for people who are vegan for moral reasons. I personally don't go that far, but I do insist on eating meat from animals that were slaughtered without pain (don't get me started on how disgusting halal and kosher is). But for me, it's just too much to give up meat altogether. As long as you're not a stereotype and insufferable about it, we're all good.

@Natsume-Hime I’m not here to guilt or convince anyone to do anything, I’m just correcting some false arguments people frequently make in defense of avoidable harm. Funny how you seem really determined to use other people’s feelings as a reason why unnecessarily hurting and exploiting animals is a good thing, but you do you. I gave up trying to convince anyone of anything years ago, however sometimes bad arguments need to be called out.

That character creator is a bit of a mess huh, y'know I think that a good way to not get the players hooked up on gender is by not trying so hard to be inclusive.. Because that then starts up the whole topic about it, the vast majority of people won't start searching for things to be offended by if you don't bring them up at all. So just make a normal gender selection and add more hair options, and if players get so caught up on their own gender by those options then maybe they need to take a step away from the game and think about whether their gender alone truly defines them as a person.

    • Natsume-Hime

      Natsume-Hime

      Сарын өмнө

@Duddridge1 The hell is "aspired trans?" Either way you don't know much about biological sex, because aside from primary sex characteristics(genitals and reproductive gear) and sex phenotype, there's also secondary sex characteristics, hormonal sex, and neurological sex. Except for neurology and genetics, we can alter all the rest. They also can mismatch from birth. I for example have XX male syndrome. I'm genetically female and was born with male genitals. Biological sex really isn't a simple binary. That's why more and more being trans is being considered to be an intersex condition related to neurology. It's nice to hear you're pan, that gender doesn't matter, but... Well you misunderstand the concept of gender identity, which is actually neurologically hardwired. It effects so much including which hormones our brains operate correctly on. It's why HRT actually improves mental health and cognitive function for trans people. Our identities are multifaceted, but our gender identities do actually play a large part in that. it shapes how we behave and how we want society to perceive us. Having representation in that light is important. It normalizes us and makes us feel included. Being denied representation and options that let us express ourselves is intentional discriminatory exclusion. Also no trans, or cis person's only personality trait is their gender. That's an absurd thing to even think. For cis folk without gender dysphoria, or the stigma for breaking gendered norms, their gender just isn't a big factor for them. For trans people, because of gender dysphoria and stigma, gender becomes a big deal. Which again means representation becomes important. It's not our only trait, but it's one that becomes important. You know I'm not going to demand to play God of War as a female Kratos, but when I can define my character, the more options and the more fluid they are, the better. When I can define my character, bit only in cis normative terms, the more I feel invisible and erased. That's true for most trans people. Be they trans women, trans men, non-binary, or so on. What I'm saying here is being inclusive isn't hard. When a game screws up being inclusive we say "hey, please do that better next time." I really don't understand why this is so hard for people to understand, or why people shout that it's not important, when to a lot of people it's *VERY* important.

    • Duddridge1

      Duddridge1

      Сарын өмнө

@Natsume-Hime Well I'm an aspired trans and I don't get hung up on my gender, no matter what my lifestyle is I know I'm still biologically male, that's just the reality of it, and people don't seem to like looking at reality. Thanks to modern media they like to think they're perfect, or at least chase the idea of becoming perfection. And that's just a chase they couldn't possibly live long enough to achieve. Whatever genitalia I have doesn't determine who I am or what I do, I don't even care which gender people refer to me as, what annoys me more is when they feel the need to keep apologising for getting it confused, because the media has conditioned this fear of offending someone's "identity". Gender shouldn't be an identity, I'd rather people just be.. people. I mean if I hung out with a group of people who's only personality traits are "I'm male!' I'm female!' I'm etc!" then I wouldn't wanna see those people anymore, those are not personalities and being around them would make watching paint dry seem appealing.

@Draconic You can read my other reply in this thread, but inclusivity does matter. Many languages don't have specifically gendered pronouns at all. Still the localization team shouldn't find it hard to include gender neutral pronouns in the applicable languages. Which quite a lot of languages do have. What's actually harder is letting characters wear any set of clothing. Since that actually doubles the sprite/model work. It's kind of why games that do it, like Fallout 4(and 76 by extension), are actually quite rare. Then there are cases like Tomodachi Life, where same sex relationships actually were a bug, broke the game, and couldn't be included. Mostly because they actually didn't think ahead far enough to include it(hetero normative bias at work), so they ended up not being able to include it. At least not without invoking game breaking bugs. People still rail at Nintendo for being homophobic, but they just painted themselves into a corner by accident on this one. In localization, including pronouns where they apply is a relatively small job, especially in games where gender is largely irrelevant to gameplay. Since the localization and translation team doesn't have that much to do. Other than to translate the game and make the contents of the translation make sense.

    • Natsume-Hime

      Natsume-Hime

That unfortunately leads to the issue of erasure and exclusion. While trans people are a small demograpic, inclusion is still extremely important to the hundreds of millions of us around the world. Plus we tend to be hung up on gender, because we get persecuted for ours in society. So against our wills, our genders become a huge factor in our everyday lives. That's ignoring the impact gender dysphoria has, which makes our gender assigned at birth actually very painful to us. Inclusivity matters. You are right though, it does stir outrage from certain groups who are looking to be outraged. But mostly that's people who want to erase the existence of trans folk from society entirely. Which is actually impossible to do, but they keep trying out of fear, ignorance, and blind hatred. Now Story of Seasons Pioneers of Olive Town did mess up, but at least their heart is in the right place, which is something virtually everyone in the trans community will understand. We might grumble that they messed up, but for most of us? That's in hopes they do better next time.
