I'm going to have to jump in and defend mass effect 2 here. There's a lot that determines the outcome of the suicide mission and the consequences aren't so easy to predict. Its not a case of loyalty mission complete = character survives. The first is how many upgrades you've gotten for the Normandy, if it's not fully upgraded some if the crew will die in the initial cut scene. Spent a load of time upgrading your ship and doing loyalty missions before starting the final mission? Half of your kidnapped crew will have been killed in the meantime. Even the loyalty thing isn't as straight forward as you can lose NPC loyalty after doing their side mission depending on other decisions you make. Choose the wrong person for the different roles in the suicide mission, either because they have the wrong skill set or don't have high enough loyalty and SOMEONE will die, but not necessarily the person who's not loyal. I would say this is a case of consequences and rewards done very well as it's very easy to mess it up and the consequences of a mistake are hard to predict. The loyalty missions themselves are also generally great, though I'm not sure they're true side quests as they are required to get the best ending.

Speaking of Witcher side-quests, I had spent a good part of the early to mid-game playing in Feline armor, since it was inexpensive and really stout stuff, and while I was wearing it, I stumbled upon Where Wolf and Cat Play. It thought it was kind of cool that the Cat witcher actually comments on what you're wearing.

Probably another downright amazing sidequest for me was in Playdead's Inside. Basically, it was all around finding these little orbs hidden in different areas of the game. Good sidequest because it allowed for replay value, gave you a new ending if you found all of them, and was very organically implemented in the game. The only hints you got were found in the game's achievement system and the yellow wires leading to the orbs (which took a keen eye to find as well). I LOVE how the game never really calls attention to this quest, rewards you for finding each orb with a new area, and can even make sense in the canon of the world. Great example of how to add an organic-feeling sidequest to your cinematic platformer game.

BOTW's Master Sword quest has to be one of my favorite side quests. It's definitely lumped in with all of the "Main" quests from that game, but the idea that you can just completely skip over it is awesome. I remember when I found it, it was totally by accident and it felt so magical because I wasn't really directed toward it at all during my playthrough.

Should make a game where all the side quests get you a companion you carry to the end of the game, but the person you didn't help is on the bad guy's side and is scale stronger than the new companion. This means you get weaker, but feel more compete and get a bigger final battle, rather than trying to solo the final boss 1v1 in a showdown.

My favorite was discovering that you could actually save your brother in the original Deus Ex game. I think I only found out it was possible on my third or fourth playthrough of the game. It wasn't that it was especially hard to do, it was more that games didn't really have those kind of options back then. When a character died you just thought it was an inevitable part of the story. I also appreciated that there was an additional cutscene towards the end of the game with him confirming that he survived that you wouldn't see if he had died.

best side quest ever; Anju and Kafei. when you know the names, you know why. The drama, the tragedy, secretive night-time meetings, the heist, the reunion of true love at the theoretical final hours of their lives, "Whattya mean there's *another* adult trapped in the body of a child in this world?! Holy Hylia, I can relate to that..."

on Skyrim; every single quest-line in that game is 10 quests long; The Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, Companions, the main quest... all 10 quests long. So, to me, the real story of the Skyrim was about a destined dragon-slaying hero saying "Screw dragon-slaying, I'm gunna assassinate some royalty for the Brotherhood, cuz I like to murder fo' money." Hell, I don't even think Skyrim played a credits sequence when I first killed Alduin, it just said "Quest Complete" and it's back to same damn map still being attacked by countless dragons. I found the main quest totally inconsequential to finish or not, but you're damn skippy I always do the DB quests and 9/10 of the Thieves Guild quests (fuck you, this is MY unbreakable lockpick).

And to Yahtzee's comment about appreciating the Riddler trophies having a puzzle associated with them - Assassin's Creed actually once did that! In 2, where you find those Animus glitches and solve art or photograph puzzles that were enjoyable in themselves, and also fed into the overall conspiracy theme of the meta narrative (by doing things like suggesting that Napoleon always has his hand in his coat holding a piece of eden). I was so disappointed that they stopped doing those.

To reiterate what I said on the other video, I don't believe fetch quests/tasks should be qualified as Side Quests. They're busy work, where as to me Side Quests have their own contained stories that may or may not build on the Critical Path/Main Quest. The gleaming example being companion quests in RPG's like Fallout and Mass Effect.

In these major aaa released games, the sidequest has become the "co-op and multiplayer" in strategy games like Civ and Age of Empires. In cyberpunk 2077, the sidequest is the most important world-building content of the game, because I think the main quest mostly ignores the map and the characters. In my first playthrough, I noticed that the main quest doesn't take you to different areas that catch your interest, you have to go there yourself and see. The main quest is supposedly determining V's fate, but it feels like the sidequest is separated from V's life in the main quest. They say there is a ticking clock, but the truth is that in-game, a hundred years could pass and nothing would change. Ps. I like cyberpunk 2077, but the feeling of separation between the sidequest and main quest made me feel like I wasn't supposed to waste time on exploring the world, since V probably knows Night city at this point, but the player doesn't. So I think the Main quest could have been introduced a bit later. One thought I had was to introduce the game mechanics in a couple of versatile missions instead of the tutorial with T-bug and the "time progression montage", they could be side-missions, so that the player could still choose to skip right to the main quest.

Regarding Mass Effect 2, it wasn't so much that the characters died because you didn't love them enough. It was that helping them out with their personal issues and giving them closure allowed them to be more focused on the suicide mission and not be distracted, which would result in their deaths. I actually thought it was quite neat.

Good side quests are all about hiding the main gameplay loop. All the witcher 3s side quests boil down to Go to location, talk/look at clues, kill things. Which is basically the same as most open world games. What the witcher does well is give interesting stories within this loop often with choice and consequence. This keeps you from just skipping all the dialog because you want to find out what happened, and you dont want to skip it because you might make the wrong choice. These choices will often appear in the game world later such as who comes to your aid in kaer morhen, or even little things like the posters you find in tussant

Small nitpicky note: characters in Mass Effect 2 only die if you choose them to do one of the critical parts of the mission (hacker in the vents, command second team, biotic shield, etc) AND their side story wasn't completed. The game played it as them being not fully focused because of unfinished business, but yeah, it didn't automatically kill any character with unfinished side quests lol.

As far as favorites, none really come to mind, but one I really disliked once I finished it was the bit in Breath of the Wild where you help this carpenter build a whole new town. While the quest itself was fun, and it was satisfying to bring all kinds of new people from all over the map to come and help and bring life to this new town, and with a lovely ending where the carpenter gets married, once it's all said and done, the carpenter tells you to piss off. Sure he and the Goron cleared the rocks on this peninsula, and he built the houses, but you're the one who brought all of the materials, not to mention the Goron, the carpenter's new wife, and everyone else selling stuff and living in the town, but when all is said and done he's like, "aright cool now fuck off." Not to mention the guy hanging out at the edge of the cliff who also tells you to fuck off.

Yeah, I felt a little sting there. I was like "I built this town with you, asshole". The new town does have an important vendor and a little side quest, if I remember correctly. So then why is the final interaction handled so poorly? If Nintendo wanted me to go back to the main quest, all they had to do is tell me "Your job here is done, Link". Wtf, Nintendo.

Just one random person's opinion: the overarching narrative should introduce your players to your game, including mechanics and world. The side quest should let you further explore what the game has to offer. Obviously oversimplified and one size does not fit all (this is a subjective, artistic medium at the end of the day), but that's what I tend to enjoy.

Far cry, Skyrim and the Witcher series all teach you the important stuff so you can use it in side stuff. I feel the "irrelevant" side stuff in games like the Yakuza series are there for when the player gets tired of the game and needs a break from it. With most games you would exit the current game and go play a different one for a while. But if there are different games already built into the one you are playing then you can go play them, and they give you a very slight bonus in the main game, so you still feel like it is progress, no matter how minor.

Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. 3 optional quality-of-life sidequests. Secret seashells in various places - get enough, power up the sword. Swapping sidequest - some of it is needed, but you don't need to get to the end. If you do go to the end you get some extra stuff and get told the right path to the end boss. You can get to the boss without this, but would probably drive you crazy to try, so still technically optional. And, of course, like many Zelda games collecting the heart pieces. Optional, but recommended.

Having to maybe do 15+ hours to look for every missing Riddler quest for a 3 min video "true ending" that you can watch right here on YT was a colossal waste of time imo.

The best 'side'-quests I've seen in recent years have to be those in Outward. It has several non-essential quests that if failed or left unfinished will affect the world your play in. Things from simply making a zone more difficult to traverse, to completely destroying a town.

A very important correction about Boone's One For My Baby: he is looking for who's responsible for his wife's disappearance and is incredibly specific about this. If you ask he'll say he knows his wife is dead and no matter how much you ask he won't say anything in this stage. The quest immediately springs to mind because it suggests an agency of the character and a knowledge that transcends your own. Boone needs help on this one specific task, and after it is over he joins you as a companion because he no longer knows what to do with himself. You only find out what happened with his wife by travelling with him, taking him along anti-Legion quests and getting his respect.

In Majora’s Mask some of the side quests were far more compelling than the main story. Anju/Kafei quest comes to mind

The podcast is definitely my favourite part, though there has been some good debates as well. Hope you guys think of other little fun videos to do on occasion!

The example I always think of for good side quests is the trails of cold steel series. It was up-to the player how much about the world and the lore you wanted to learn and how close you got to your party members which added to the story/gameplay But at the same time you could just do the main quests and still understand the main plot. Also side note/question, I was listening to the podcast while working and they said this is the last one, I haven’t finished it yet, but I hope the series isn’t concluded cause I really do enjoy the back and forth between Jack and Yahtzee

@Koh Kyo I freely admit it is a bit of a time sink but I really enjoyed it. What I tend to warn people is the first game is really all focused on introducing players and world then the second one tends to be the ramping up of the stakes. The third and forth one are the same kind of format as well.

The side quests made me like cyberpunk, despite all the issues. They were better than the main story as well

They had more consistent payoff imo. I agree completely. It usually breathed more life into the side characters.

side quests in games have a relaxing feeling to them there is something relaxing about going on the other side of the map for a single potato (and probably committing mass murder)

Witcher 3 did have good side quests, which expands your knowledge of the world, culture, and people on top of being rewarding gameplay-wise

@Texelion 3D prints The side quests are the confidant bonds, skill building and mementos, which is more of your typical dungeon crawling sort of place. It ties in with the main plot and it's a good idea to progress as far as you can, but it's technically optional. It's a great way to get exp and items. It'll open up a few days after the Kamoshida arc finishes. Remember you can adjust the difficulty if you're stuck! I also recommend grinding through the palaces the minute they open up and then save the calling card for later. Some confidants are a bit of a waste of time so I'd recommend focusing on Takemi, the politician outside of the station, Mishima, Kawakami and the fortune teller (about half way). Also feed the plant in your room because it gives you kindness points and studying in the library gives you guts and knowledge at the same time. Oh! And make sure you get a job at the beef bowl shop at some point. Honestly I'd recommend P5 Royal if you can get it. It adds in more activities to do in LeBlanc that boost skills so you can get one done after a palace visit or when your little cat nanny makes you stay in. It also has an added third semester and it's amazing. I felt like it made some great quality of life changes. ...sorry that got long, I just really love this game. Anyway you should watch Persona 5 for beginners by SuperButterBuns. It's helpful and her for beginners series is hillarious. Happy playing!!

When do the side quests in Persona 5 start ? I just finished the Kamoshida castle and barely had any time to do anything else due to the time limit, it kinda made me quit the game. I loved it at first but it's not really what I expected and I wonder if it's gonna change later.
