While hairy dad games have their tropes, I get the vibe that Jack dislikes them at a personal level. When he was saying it doesn't appeal to them and that it's outdated and even women like their men to be sensitive, I was thinking, "... um ok. Relax there buddy. Yahtzee didn't seem to have much input there. I'm guessing he didn't agree fully with his statement there.

Most of the points in common between GoW and tLoU that Jack points out are just universal parent/child experiences, except maybe the second chance at a family, which GoW doesn't lean a lot on. The child being special is just the old video game trope of the chosen one being passed to the deuteragonist as a "subversion" of said trope.

I don't agree with that analysis of Joel at all. PART of his arc is developing an attachment to Ellie, but it's not in the name of some heavy-handed "be nice to your kids" message. He was already a caring father when the story began, then the grief of losing his daughter turns him into a much more callous figure. Between then and meeting Ellie, he learns to kill for survival and even alludes to screwing over potentially innocent people. Ellie gradually reawakens his paternal side but then things go wrong fucking FAST. Once he has something he feels an actual need to protect, his monster side gets even worse. He's willing to brutally torture people and outright condemn the whole species for Ellie. And in the end, his inability to be honest about it SHOWS that he only really did it for himself. He just couldn't put himself through that kind of loss again. I don't think The Last of Us 1 even had a conventional message. To me it was just a character study of one deeply traumatised man. Take whatever you will from it. Evidently all Yahtzee ever took was "Murder man supposed to be hero? Me think writing stupid." (No, I don't really think Yhatzee's unintelligent, I just always found it MINDBLOWING how he couldn't get that Joel was a deliberately fucked up character. Was he listening to a podcast when he played through it or something?) God of War is EXACTLY about "Hey Kratos, stop being a dick, you've got a kid you stand to poison exactly like you were poisoned" though. So it makes sense that game does a better job of saying that when TLAU1 had no interest in telling us how to be good dads.

One thing I find strikingly odd in those “hairy dad” games is that the mother is often completely absent. It’s like the child just spawned in their dad’s arm on birth and were raise like so every since. Bioshock Infinite, no mum TLoU, no mum God of War, no mum For all this talk of being woke and representing genders equally, I don’t understand why there’s a lack of strong mothers in the mainstream industry.

@LK_tutturu writers know a lot about diving into ancient ruins do they? Killing mythical monsters? Stealth takedowns? No, they write “hairy dads” because it’s become an easy and popular template to use, the same way the “damsel in distress” was once the more popular template. It’s absolutely not about writing what they know.

@TheKrossRoads I think we're talking about different things here. I'm talking about strong mom characters being the centerpiece of the game. In JRPGs, the single mothers raising their child are basically shrugged off for most of the game. In "hairy dad" games, the dad is almost always the protagonist. If not, they play a central role in the whole plot. Meanwhile, in JRPGs, the mother does next to nothing. They are present in the first chapter or tutorial, then the teenage boy/girl, leaves the house for their adventure to slay god or whatever, and the mother is never seen again. But, your example is even less valid because we're also talking about different cultures. Most of the "strong hairy" dad games are western games. Think of any modern AAA games in the West where there's a characters serving as a strong mother. You'll find it incredibly difficult to find any.

    • TheKrossRoads

      TheKrossRoads

      Сарын өмнө

There are strong mothers in plenty of games, but no one calls them out because it's standard. It's practically a trope in JRPGs for the main character to be a teenager without a father, raised by a single mother. No one seems to be bothered that nearly every pokemon protagonist just doesn't have a dad; and that shit has been going on in pokemon since the 90's. Having the dad be the one raising the kid without the mom *is* representing equally. Single dads are finally getting the time to shine in modern gaming.

I mean, considering almost every hairy dad narrative characterises the dad's gruffness and emotional distance as negative traits which gradually break down over the course of the narrative, I'd hardly call them antiquated endorsements of "toxic masculinity" which in most cases is just either repressed trauma or conscious stoicism. If anything, it would be refreshing to see a weak willed modern beta male grow into a fiercely protective guardian.

4:33 - "...that is not where the, like, male ideal is anymore..." Well that's because the current ideal male is fucked... The true ideal male is not at all toxic (saying that is what's actually toxic), and it's not really distant either... It's just that the ideal male has, will, and will continue to be (despite modern people not knowing what they truly want) a strong, independent, unwavering and straightforward buff scruffy dude, who often knows what's best for the people he's supposed to protect... That will never truly change, even if it is an unfair and unrealistic standard for men... It's still something good to strive for though. Dads all over the world absolutely could be more open and loving (like with hugging, especially), but at the same time (since more than one thing can be true at once) it is quite clear today that as soon as "dads" become too soft, bits and pieces of a functional society start to slowly fall apart... It doesn't matter how much we try to convince ourselves it's not true... We NEED strong men. Sorry for the little rant... this just had to be said.

I think they are being to hard on TSoU part 2. It wasn't about Harry dad it was about how we are all dealing with this cycle of grief. So the hairy dad character was just beginning to forgive himself and find this peace. This is the big issue or theme the game should say is how are dealing with the grief and you see that with Joel you see that with Ellie and see it with Abby.

@Jaden Lingerfelt yeah they were really well interwoven and it felt organic. She had the two main motivations and everything she did was because of on or both of these motivations. Even when the whole plot with the king kicks off, it is a consequence of her looking for Rost's killer, and even though it is a massive detour to help this unkown king, it pays off in the end when all the stories come together

I guess this could evolve into a general discussion on parenthood, but I just didn't like these games or their gameplay because it was pretty boring? Sure it looks nice and it's fine but the stories are really meh. I don't know really how they're supposed to appeal to anyone from a father-figure perspective? But I can say that maybe because I had a very good relationship with my dad. He was a hard ass without a doubt, but he grew up during the communist revolution in China, and basically solved most problems growing up like everyone else around him with violence. He's always been pretty rough around the edges but I never doubted that he cared about us, and he taught us pretty good morals, even though he was never really warm. I only sort of see that warmness about him now that he's much older with the grandkids, I would assume because he feels content that all the hardships he had to deal with in life have kinda paid off, and his future family or lineage are safe and content, not having to deal with imminent danger on a daily basis.

@Rai Hanzo so science knows that evolution as a process is happening and some of how it works. The why isn’t always apparent and some things that should lower reproductive ability can still be passed on, cystic fibrosis for example. So some of the mechanism isn’t fully understood, but anything with life will never be a mathematical certainty which leads to the theory vs law distinction.

@Joshua Levenberg I see, so which part of evolution is the theory? I am religious yet I know that the change in human features based on time is true, like how people in colder climates develop paler skin than in warmer climates. But when it comes to that popular monkey to human picture, I read that it is a misconception. So what is the theory?

    • Joshua Levenberg

      Joshua Levenberg

      Сарын өмнө

@Rai Hanzo Scientific facts are fully proven in reality. No matter how much science evolves, the laws of motion, thermodynamics, and quantum mechanics will remain the same. Scientific theories, on the other hand, can always change based on new evidence. That's why no one has reached a set conclusion regarding evolution.

Is Mother 3 a hairy dad game? Flint is only playable in the first chapter mind you. He is a terrible father. Spends all his time mourning his dead wife, searching for his missing son, all the while neglecting Lucas, the son he still has.

There is another similarity in these "dad" games Jack missed, but it does tie in to his point of the child picking up the worst traits of the hero. And that is the first traumatic murder each child commits in front of their parental figure. The Last of Us, it is debatably when Ellie hacks David apart. God of War, Atreus murders Modi in cold blood. And even in Bioshock Infinite, Elizabeth kills Daisy Fitzroy. Each of these moments is meant to be a character development or something, when the child loses all their naivety and innocence. I love all these games but the story structure is full of these tropes and repetition. On another note, I'd say the first significant example of Hairy dad in gaming that started off the trend is Red Dead Redemption and John Marston's epilogue.

Well, Ellie kills that guy to save Joel before she kills David. Hell, she kills David’s friend by herself. She also kills (infected) prior to meeting Joel. Atreus helps kill several enemies. Period. Learns to hunt from his mother. Elizabeth was tricked into doing so.
