    I think it's a great idea to give each character plot its own title, though maybe you don't need to smash cut to a new screen for it. Maybe just a title card at the top of the screen. Like Hole pulls the gun and a jingle plays as the hud fades out and "The (Mostly) Invisible Man" or whatever fades in at the top of the screen. Something like that.

    Individual title cards for the new character quests would be ideal, I think. Starstruck Vagabond in small, and then something like "Hole'd Up" or some shit in some sort of font that is maybe somewhat indicative of his story, personality, or whatnot.

    An in-game excuse for title screens could be through a documentary show that plays on spaceTV, they somehow always get footage of your quests, though you never see them poking their camera from behind rocks. Could double as a "fame" mechanic for discounts/extra dialogue too. Also maybe a rival ship/captain on the show that has way cooler quests, kissing princesses and the like, but you probably discover is a fraud explorer.

    I realized something fun about the title a little while ago and thought I'd share. not sure if I missed that it's intentional or not but Starstruck can be broken up either Star Struck (struck by the stars) or Stars Truck, as in they're a truck drivers among the stars

    You wanted feedback on the game. Well the stuff I liked the most was going down to planets and gathering up stuff like warp fuel and assorted goodies to sell or use. The banking controls took a while to get used to. I keep thinking they should be the up and down buttons. I also think the autopilot would be good at finding the streams and avoiding asteroids. I would give an incentive to the player to play that minigame to mine asteroids and maybe find derelict ships perhaps? The thing I didn't like was the fact every bit of the ship kept breaking. It is akin to having a truck and the engine breaks every 15 miles. No one would build a spaceship like that. Of course you could ad something like the fact you are using cheap parts and you can buy better parts that don't break with more money. The upgrade item doesn't really make sense. You need to go on a quest to get some thing to add a room? Ok, if it was some sort of precursor artifact that lets you get the super jump drive or some special item then that would make sense. I think you should add NPCs that wander about and you can talk with and maybe they tell you interesting rumors and stuff like in old JRPGs. These aren't the crewmember NPCs but just regular guys and the people you see in the shops and maybe in bars, if you add bars. It inhabited planets need more decoration in the spaceports. You may wish to add a way of dumping cargos that are past their delivery date. I tried selling them to a trader. It makes sense they might buy those like a consignment deal. Otherwise you need to drop them on some uninhabited planet. On the subject of Beta testing the NPCs. I am well aware you don't want to give away the full beta but at the same time you are asking people to do work and pay for it! No one does that! Sure, we should pay for the game if you desire to charge but we shouldn't pay for the beta. A though occurs that you may wish to include 9 NPCs for testing purposes to see if everything works out and we potential players and buyers will like it. I am assuming there will be more than 9 NPC crew people in the game. Just the Hole NPC may be enough. We may see bugs or improvements you don't. Oh, add a ship's computer in. That was fun to have at the beginning. Well, I hope you will read this and get some use from it!

    Something that frequently frustrates me in a game is when the writer- who is a lot more attached to their characters than I am- informs me that I have come to understand a character and value them when I- the player- am saying "No I haven't, that dude's a dickhead." It may be wise then to make each crew member coming aboard a choice, rather than something that just happens. Locking me into the questline is all well and good- he IS literally holding a gun to my head, after all- but at the end when he says "Hey, holding you and your ship hostage was a dick move, let me come aboard and I'll make it up to you" I would greatly appreciate the option to say "No, you and your eyebrows can fuck off."

    That smash cut to title might be a bad idea if you're gonna do it for every initial ohshit moment of character introductions, but having something to signify that you are doing a mission to get a new crewmember instead of a really elaborate buggery contract would be useful

    I like the idea of giving every character a different opening screen, you should make the screen in the style of the characters you did the personality type charts for, so the flash gordon type guy gets a flash gordon type screen and so on.

    The ship-flying minigame will probably eventually get boring once people get good enough at it that its no longer a challenge. To amend this, you could add ship upgrades like a "kinetic energy harvester" or something that gives you a tiny bit of fuel or a boost of speed for getting near-misses in the minigame. That way people can make the game more rewarding, more complex, and have a higher skill cap as they get better. Upgrades for this wouldn't increase the range of the near-miss but instead make it smaller for a much bigger boost. Though I'm a big stupid idiot so don't listen to me, feature creep is probably already on your mind.

    Are you setting up the dialog each in its own line of code? Isn't that opening a fair amount of potential for errors to creep in, as well as bloating the code itself? Wouldn't it make more sense to store the dialog in seperate text files and call those text files as arguments, while simply having a 'dialog' function that takes a text file as an argument, processes it and determines what lines to use where? I'm very much a novice coder so there might be a good reason to not do it this way, or maybe it's a limitation of game maker? But it seems better to compartmentalise these sorts of things to make code easier to read, run through and so on.

    In the game I'm making on RPGmaker, the majority of the characters DO sorta get along...but the majority of them are ALREADY friends/allies f the protagonist, they jsut need convincing dueto the protagonist's apeparance having changed due to plot, and the other charcters that arent previous allies are, in the case of one a naive, optimistic idiot and, in the case of another, initially using you to help him murder his evil brother and then joins because he wants a leader to follow.

Like the flash frozen Stewardess who is unnacostumed in a world where her job no longer applies, or the protagonsit of Something in the sea who is possessed by the "soemthing in the sea" and manipulating you for nefarious ends, or maybe even the glorious leader from Bunker Buster who bosses you around thinking he's some hot shot and has to grapple with the fact that noone remembers him or his glorious riegn.

    Alrighty then, let me preface this by saying 1. I have a tremendous amount of respect for this project and I absolutely cannot wait for the final release, and 2. I know you (or anyone else for that matter) probably won't see this, so I'm mainly writing this for my own sense of relief given the comments I've had for the last few episodes. Fantastic, that's out of the way. Anywho... Firstly, you seem to have a lot of distaste for Bioware games and I can't say I blame you, given your usual preferences. That said, you do seem to be writing the subplot of many Bioware games with regard to the crew. I mean, recruiting (and eventually romancing) your various crewmates is arguably the main plot of Mass Effect 2, with the whole Collector thing largely being a subplot if you just go by screen time. You spend most of your time traipsing around the galaxy dragging edgy misfits on your spaceship and helping them with their daddy issues. And ya know, it still managed to be entertaining and compelling despite its core gameplay faults (hidey-shooty-massive-booty). The thing worth taking in my opinion would be the character-to-character interactions. As you said, person-to-person conflict is the primary source of tension, and I think it's a good idea to have that happen regardless of whether the player is involved or not. Jack and Miranda *will* dislike each other no matter what you say. Tali and Legion *will* distrust each other, and there's not a lot you can do about it. At certain points, the player is given the opportunity to attempt to keep things peaceful (or not) and choose a side. But these conflicts happen no matter what, and I think this goes a long way to making the characters relatable. It makes them feel alive, rather than meat sacks that only exist to absorb bullets until they die. Secondly, and this is in regards to your last dev diary, why not have crew more reliably do ship maintenance? If you're looking for even more of a player incentive to pick them up and care about them, this seems like a decent way to do it. Not only is their story compelling, not only do you want to know why they need your help, but now they can help you reliably in return, rather than just being dead weight. If you want to keep that rolling, you could simply have them only do work as long as they are satisfied on your ship. You could even have them leave if they are dissatisfied enough, though that may perhaps be a little much (depending on your story roadmap and all that). This provides some gameplay incentive to continue to interact with your crew once they're already aboard. Thirdly, and perhaps a bit off topic, I'm looking forward to more information on soundtrack plans. I'm one of those music types and just for funsies I started writing an over-the-top TNG-style march with this game in mind. A bit more info on the tone you're going for might be useful though. For example, is our protagonist supposed to try to save the galaxy, or is he/she just trying to carve out a niche for him/herself? Are you looking for full 16-bit sounds, or more like how Undertale and Celest cheat that style to do whatever they want? You don't have to announce them if you've already got a plan, but they're questions that would help most composers figure out what direction to go in. Keep up the good work and I sincerely hope development continues to go smoothly. Thank you for documenting the process.

    In terms of crew npc: for some of them rather than you irreversibly getting stuck in their plot, how about you can choose to help them or not, BUT they don't stay there. They disappear for a while and turn up with some new dialogue elsewhere. As if they are actually inhabitants of this universe going about their own lives.

    The smash cut to title on each crew member mission should be more than just a smash cut though if you want emphasis on the importance instead of just confusion of the context. It should have some personalisation for each crew member, even if its just a close up of the sprite and their name next to the title, to make it damn clear this is an important character and not just a "hey remember this is the game your playing" smash cut.

    This episodes ties in nicely with this week's Slightly Civil War about side quests. One slight difference though was that in that video, Yahtzee talked about collecting bear scrotums, while in this one he talked about collecting lobster vaginas.

    Hi Yahtzee! Are you still considering the 'hold the phone' concept being implemented as a minigame for our protagonist to work through, perhaps during a character plot development? The 'agitation' within the minigame could be coupled to how compatible their personalities are (You mentioned something along these lines during the S1 finale of devdiary) I'm a big fan of all of your work and reviews. Cheers! P.S. An agitation meter could be fleshed out as an interesting mechanic for how productive you and npcs are after interactions. Just an aside that struck me.

    Dear Yahtzee, If I may pitch a character idea to you: it would be a character that cannot take criticism and is very braggadocios while also exaggerating. You could say they are thinned skinned and full of... it. The character model would look cylindrical, tank like, and have a loud speaker crudely attached for a mouth. For names, maybe Seth O. or Marcia perhaps. mull it over.

    I legit don't know really anything about coding (even though I have several friends that do); but I think proper placement of the semi-colon would be a bit entertaining. If there is one thing I do know about coding is spelling and grammar will make, break, or bug out your code.

    I trust your game making experience far more than my near-zero experience, but one thought I had when it comes to making a book full of varied and unique dialogue and having to put that in as code will be how difficult organization is going to be. I would suggest making a dialogue-organization system that can plug into the engine so that all the dialogue and text can be separate from the code. I was thinking about putting it as a well organized CSV file/spreadsheet, though I saw others suggest a more full fledged database approach, which may be wiser. It would also make the potential for language translations infinitely easier ("Here, take this spreadsheet, translate each phrase, put it back, and boom it's done").

    If you're locked into completing stories, I think there has to be a way to reject them at or near the start. I think the hijacking opening with Hole is an issue if he's supposed to be (eventually) likeable because you're guaranteeing, literally no matter what happens, that a good 40% of the players will unconditionally hate him and not give a shit about learning about him. This feels like the creation of one of those despised Bioware NPCs where the forums end up filled with "How do I get rid of _______?", "Can I kill _______?" threads.

    I think smash cutting to the title would only really work well the first crew member, like how AssCreed Odyssey has its title screen about 10 hours in when you finally leave the tutorial island. It’s a “oh, the story is JUST NOW starting?!” moment. Also, doing that for every crew member I think would feel really limiting from a writing perspective on the second or third story.

    To introduce each new crew quest, instead of doing a smash cut to a full-screen title card, you could have a transparent mini-title card (like the name of the quest stylized within a logo or something) pop up in either the center or corners of the screen, then have it fade out after a little bit of it being up. It wouldn't disrupt the flow of the gameplay that much, and you could even style it to look like the opening credits of a show.

    It's going to be interesting how you're working with the event flagging for crew member encounters, since you're locking people into one story beat and the events are semi-random (Going off the fact you mentioned that you could have encountered others before Hole). That's going to be a lot of flagging if you don't take it into account early and architect for it. It would be mighty strange and unsatisfying to encounter Hole, get his stuff going and then encounter another, but are unable to engage, depending on how random the whole system works behind the scenes.

    Why is every sentient being I've seen in your game so far some shade of humanoid? In Star Trek there were budgetary reasons, why every Alien race, was either energy beings, some sort of sludge, or actors with the same stupid silicone cut outs stuck to their faces, but arranged slightly differently. But you're not restricted by that. Go nuts!
