Jack: „Monster Hunter didn‘t click for me, at least the „World“ version didnt.“ This is completely understandable. I‘ve played every Monster Hunter game since „Freedom Unite“ on the PSP and „World“ felt like a simplified and watered-down version of the Monster Hunter experience. I‘d almost compare it to playing Pokemon Let‘s Go Pikachu/Eeve instead of a mainline Pokemon game. You kind of get the same experience but by no means the full/true experience.

Whenever I hear someone say that they don't like racing games, I can't help but wonder what kind of racing game they're playing. If they've only played racing simulators like Forza, then yes, those games are dull as dishwater. I feel like both the industry and the gaming public have forgotten the pure joy of arcadey racers like Burnout. In those games, it's fun to just hit the gas and steer.

Monster hunter is a series that get more enjoyable the deeper you get. In the beginning you only have basic armour, which are relatively directionless. As you get further in, armour gets a lot more focused and specialized. And then you get to high-rank, armours become not only better in general, but also get decoration slots, letting you really make custom builds for specific purposes. Not to mention you unlock more monsters, more gameplay systems, more moves in some games etc. Monster Hunter is a series that gives more, the more you invest in it. Which does means it can have a rough start, but once you get through that, you're stuck with it, and you wonder where the sun went.

My main problem with MHW is that the Weapon Tutorial/Teaching experience is plain awful. Rather than the game organically teaching you how weapons work, usually everyone just points you a to a video done by Arekkz or somewhat like that. Which to me is a cardinal sin a game dev can do for me personally. Especially when MHW is marketted as "Accessible" or similar to Dark Souls/Bloodbourne (which I love) but the game never clicked for me during the 15 hours I played it.

Hi, your point about the tutorial being afwul its completely true for new players. I think the reasons for why the tutorial is design in that way (This is my opinion as a older player so i could be wrong :D ) is because: 1) each weapon has unique playstiles different from each other with a lot of information that can be overwhelming as a tutorial. Usually the game give you the base controls so you can experiment. Areks videos is usually the full move list of the weapon and a couple of tips from his experience. It is the same info in the game but without reading paragraphs like my comment lol. 2) the game cannot teach you the perfect combo because there is no perfect combo, every attack is situational. It depends if you are attacking a fast or slow monster, if the monster is incapacited maybe you can use a combo or a heavy attack. You as a player learn what is the best attack for each situation. It like a turn base combat, attack and see what the monster will do. Sorry for the long comment but if you see this I hope you can give it another chance with a different point of view, the game is worth it. Have a nice day :)

Well I'm a huge fan of the CRPG genre, and I can promise, thinking that Pillars of Eternity is ba boring drag is completely normal. In this case it may be the tedious game that offers nothing new to the table rather than the somewhat slow genre. Than again Dragon Age 1 was fine.

MHW was my first MH game but I completely fell in love with it. I was aware of the series before that but hadn't really engaged with it in large part because it was mostly on portables and I'm just not much of a portable player. But damn MHW was a fantastic experience from beginning to end. For me at least it might be the closest thing to gameplay perfection that I've ever played. It's all PvE, sure, but that's all I really care about. I'm not into PvP. Nothing but boss fights? As if that's a bad thing. You know what's boring in video games? Fighting a bunch of the same mobs over and over. Boss fights are the *fun* part. So by all means cut out the rest of that crap and give me a bunch of unique and interesting monsters to fight. It's got 14 weapon types that all actually feel and play completely different, to the point where it's almost like having 14 different games to play in one. It's got a unique progression system that's much more engaging than just grinding levels but also let's you feel stronger without ever being overpowered. It's got quite good co-op if you want to play with your friends. It has some truly unique and challenging fights if that's what you're looking for. Finally defeating Extreme Behemoth for the first time was probably one of the most memorable gaming experiences of my life. (Note that it was also completely optional if you *didn't* want to do it. That fight was largely just there for the challenge.) It just amazes me that more people don't give this series a chance. It's so damn good.

Normally it has to do with finding the right weapon for yourself for a lot of people, as well as just learning the combat in general. Most people underestimate just how deep it is and how much freedom you have with it. Most people just run at the monster and just whack it without really thinking about anything the very first time. They don't know how their weapon works, they aren't paying attention to what the monster is doing or what the current area is offering the player to use. For me I became hooked when I found my weapon the gunlance, and learned the majority of its moveset. Then I learned to utilize different parts of that moveset against different monsters. Then I started really paying attention to environments I was fighting in, such as 'oh look, there's a ledge I can use to try to mount the monster!' Or 'oh look! This cave has stalagtites on the ceiling! If I hit those they'll knock the monster over!' The experience really opens up more and more as learn more about the game. It can be rough starting out because it feels clunky, because it IS clunky when you don't know what you're doing. Your weapon doesn't feel good because you don't know how to utilize it. Etc.

It's a bit like Dark Souls in that you have to do a lot of research on how to build and play. Some weapons are easier to play against certain monsters and each weapon has a bunch of attack combos, but you usually only need to learn 3-4 of the combos of each weapon. I learned a lot from watching SDShepard on YT (formerly known as "Social Dissonance"). AAAnd most of the fun in Monster Hunter is really just playing together with friends and other people.

When it comes to patience in gaming for me personally I have to really have buy into the story, even if the gameplay is kinda trash if I’m hooked on the story/characters I will keep going. The reverse of that is for games like monster hunter as much as I enjoy the combat, the stories have never kept me engaged and I tend to end up dropping them.

So I began to show it to them, and at the other side of a bar there was this girl watching in our direction, as soon as I "ripped away" my finger she became all white and passed out. After we woke her up she told me she actually believed that I ripped my own finger. One of the best laughs in my life.
